GPS Tracking Will Help Bureau Come to Its Census

Hey, what’s that census taker doing on your front lawn? Feeding your home’s address and location coordinates into a U.S. Census Bureau database of every residence in the country, just like the bureau said it would do for the upcoming 2010 census.

The census takers will be using devices employing GPS fleet tracking-type technology – even though the residences won’t be in motion (except maybe house trailers and houses being moved).

According to one blog post from 2006, “The Census Bureau wants to use this information for their own statistical studies and they claim this Master Address File could save lives in case of a natural disaster where a precise evacuation might be necessary.”

There doesn’t seem to be much public interest in this tracking project yet, even though the bureau announced it a while ago. But that’s certain to change as more and more people involved in privacy rights learn about it.

If your truck population could use some precision tracking, consider GPS fleet tracking in the new year. It will give you a database of your own that can lead to greater fuel efficiency, better routing and improved driver satisfaction. And that’s just for starters.
